Bristol’s shopfront guidance is Policy Advice Note 8, Shopfront Guidelines, from the Bristol Local Plan series. The note carries no date on its face; the council still publishes it as current advice.
It sorts premises into three tiers — listed buildings, conservation areas, and everywhere else — and then pulls historic shopfronts on historic streets up into the conservation-area tier even when the street is not designated.
Shutters and security
Listed buildings: security should come from reinforced stallrisers and laminated glass. External shutters of any type are not suitable; an open-lattice shutter set well back behind the window may be acceptable.
Bristol Local Plan Policy Advice Note No. 8 — Shopfront Guidelines, section 3Conservation areas: the same measures as listed buildings. If a shutter is needed it should be open-lattice or demountable, preferably internal, with the housing kept behind the line of the fascia.
Bristol Local Plan Policy Advice Note No. 8 — Shopfront Guidelines, section 3Elsewhere: historic shopfronts on historic streets are treated like conservation areas. For other shops, internal shutters are preferred and any external shutter should be open-lattice or demountable.
Bristol Local Plan Policy Advice Note No. 8 — Shopfront Guidelines, section 3All external shutters and grilles need planning permission. They should cover the glazing only and be built into the fascia, pilasters and cill, finished to suit the shopfront.
