Is it worth repairing an old shopfront rather than replacing it?

Often, and the council may prefer it. Some of the shopfront guides we track will not support removing a historic shopfront in a conservation area unless it is shown that repair cannot be done. A front that is structurally sound but has a failed floor spring or a dropped door is a repair, not a rebuild.

What usually goes wrong with an aluminium shopfront door?

The floor spring or overhead closer wears and the door slams or will not latch; the top pivot works loose and the door drops and drags; the lock’s cylinder or keep goes out of line; seals perish and the frame starts to whistle and leak. Most are a single visit once the part is identified.

Yes. Most repair calls are to fronts fitted by someone else, often years ago. A photograph of the fault and of any maker’s label on the frame or closer helps us bring the right part.
